Non-working Swiss residence assessed under the appropriate nationality and cantonal framework, including qualifying retirement or significant fiscal-interest cases.
Residency to citizenship

Each stage has its own eligibility requirements.
- Benefits
- A residence permission to make Switzerland your home, subject to the approved conditions, property purchase alone is insufficient.
- Eligibility
- Ordinary third-country retirement generally requires age 55 or over, special personal Swiss ties and adequate lifelong means. A qualifying cantonal lump-sum taxation case is a separate discretionary basis.
- Requirements
- Apply before arrival with resources, accommodation, passport and background evidence. A fiscal-interest case needs a cantonal tax agreement and federal approval, Geneva requires moving your centre of interests and spending most of the year in Switzerland, without local gainful activity.
YOUR LONG-TERM PATHWAY
Residency to citizenship
- 01
Cantonal residence
Obtain and renew the appropriate residence permission, a tax arrangement alone does not grant immigration status.
- 02
C settlement permit
Secure a C permit under the rules for your nationality, residence history and integration. Settlement periods are not identical for every nationality.
- 03
Swiss citizenship · normally 10 years
Ordinary naturalisation requires a C permit and ten years of qualifying Swiss residence, including three of the previous five. Cantonal and communal residence, integration and language conditions also apply.
Naturalisation includes federal, cantonal and communal assessments. A financial arrangement does not guarantee settlement or citizenship.
Each stage requires its own qualifying conditions and decision. The years shown are eligibility periods, not approval times.
