A basis to relocate and carry out the approved independent or business activity after receiving the residence permission.
Eligibility
Non-EU/EEA/Swiss applicants with credible professional activity or a viable investment intention, plus adequate living resources.
Requirements
Evidence of the proposed business or service activity, available resources, accommodation, passport and visa documents. Regulated professions require recognition or authorisation, the residence-permit stage is separate from the entry visa.

    The D2 residence-visa pathway supports independent professionals and entrepreneurs establishing genuine activity in Portugal.

  2. 02
    Permanent residence (optional) · from 5 years

    A separate application after five years of temporary residence, subject to basic Portuguese, means of support, accommodation and the other statutory conditions.

  3. 03
    Citizenship · 7 or 10 years

    For new applications under the law effective 19 May 2026: seven years of legal residence for EU and Portuguese-official-language-country nationals, ten years for other nationals. Language, civic knowledge, character and other nationality conditions apply.

Permanent residence is an option, not a compulsory intermediate step. Applications already pending before 19 May 2026 are subject to the previous nationality rules. A minimum-stay investment permit does not itself confer citizenship.

Each stage requires its own qualifying conditions and decision. The years shown are eligibility periods, not approval times.

How does this application work?

Apply to the competent Portuguese consulate for the D2 residence visa with the independent-professional or entrepreneur evidence. After lawful entry, complete the AIMA residence-permit application. Establish the approved activity and maintain the required professional, financial and accommodation conditions.
