Benefits
The residence version leads to an initial two-year permit, renewable for three-year periods if conditions continue.
Eligibility
Genuine overseas remote work and average monthly income over the preceding three months of at least four Portuguese minimum monthly wages.
Requirements
Employment or service evidence, tax-residence documentation and income records. For residence, provide a valid visa, passport, foreign-work relationship declaration and Portuguese accommodation evidence.

Residency to citizenship

    The D8 pathway allows remote employees and independent professionals to live in Portugal while working for clients or employers outside the country.

  2. 02
    Permanent residence (optional) · from 5 years

    A separate application after five years of temporary residence, subject to basic Portuguese, means of support, accommodation and the other statutory conditions.

  3. 03
    Citizenship · 7 or 10 years

    For new applications under the law effective 19 May 2026: seven years of legal residence for EU and Portuguese-official-language-country nationals, ten years for other nationals. Language, civic knowledge, character and other nationality conditions apply.

Permanent residence is an option, not a compulsory intermediate step. Applications already pending before 19 May 2026 are subject to the previous nationality rules. A minimum-stay investment permit does not itself confer citizenship.

Each stage requires its own qualifying conditions and decision. The years shown are eligibility periods, not approval times.

How does this application work?

Apply for the residence version of the D8 visa with overseas remote-work evidence and the preceding three months’ qualifying income. After arrival, submit the AIMA residence application with the continuing work relationship and Portuguese address. Renew subject to continued eligibility.
